"This Foundation has had a remarkable impact on
the College of Charleston campus and the Charleston
community. Not only do they provide assistance for students,
but also educate the public regarding students with
special needs."
- Sue Sommer-Kresse, Ph. D. College of Charleston
This is a truly inspirational endeavor they
(the GKF Foundation) have undertaken.
They have found a true need in our community.
- Former College of Charleston President Alex Sanders
"The Gavalas-Kolanko Foundation is both unique
and special in that it focuses its attention
on helping those who may be handicapped physically,
but
won’t be denied mentally.
-Martin Grant,

The Gavalas-Kolanko Foundation was established
by Nicholas B. Gavalas and Dr. Ronald Kolanko. Mr. Gavalas
and Dr. Kolanko came together to form the GKF in 1999 after becoming
aware of the costly requirements for students with disabilities
wishing to attend college. As influential members of the Charleston
community, they assembled a dynamic board, supportive staff, and
a strategic plan for success. Gavalas-Kolanko Foundation members
strive to assist students with their secondary educational costs,
and increase support and awareness of their needs.
This years beneficiary events for the GKF include the annual James Island Connector Run, and a silent auction fundraising event at JPaulz. Past events have included the College of Charleston's Oozeball Tourament, Absolut Charleston Nights, and Clear Channel Communications Wine & Jazz Festival. The GKF operates due to the generosity of sponsors, donors, and event participants.
